Even though it is much less well known than the venerable GW basic, interpreted BASIC survives even in modern machines as VBScript. Line numbers are gone, but it is much more function oriented, and even has some object capabilities (including elaborate objects that let you interact with windows in detailed ways if that is necessary).

However, at its core, it is still BASIC and should be comfortable for you. Here are some links to start with:
