You can probably work it out well enough by considering a handful of simple
cases.
You have the advantage of knowing that the frequencies are close enough so
that it makes sense to consider them the same with only the phase changing.
Case 1: phase is 0: line at 45 degrees.
Case 2: phase is 180: line at -45
Case 3: phase 90: circle clockwise
Case 4: phase is 270: circle ccw
So if it takes x minutes to shift from one pattern to another, your phase is
shifting by y degrees per minute...
