It is interesting that Harrison, who must have been a quite intuitive
thinker, solved a problem in rotational mechanics when he built a
circular balance to replace dumbells.
Foucault, 1851, about 100 years later, presented his pendulum
that was controlled by earth's rotation. Even at that time, the  
mathematics
based establishment had not analysed rotational mechanics,
and challenged his analysis of the phenomenon.

Harrison's most lasting legacy must be the bimetal thermal
sensor/actuator.
