To follow up on my previous request for help, I ordered a Garmin 
GPSmap60 which delivers an unloaded 3.2V to the MCX connector with fresh 
batteries.

Tried it on a couple of Symetricom and Motorola site antennas on the end 
of 100 feet of cable and it works just fine.

So thanks for all the pointers and help - job done!
