Lifting the "fins" (heatsink) off the device will completely defeat
the purpose of them as the heat needs to conduct from the base of the
unit and onto the the heatsink for it to be of any worth. Use of
thermal paste will help and lapping both surfaces to a flat mirror
surface can help immensely. Make sure when mounting the device that
the fins are arranged so that air can move vertically over them, IE.
put it on it's side with the fins running vertically.
