Hi

Since the ATtiny26L is now in the "sleeps with the fishes" category, you would be upgrading with any of the parts Atmel now sells to fit the same socket.

The ATtiny261A is the closest equivalent (2K flash). The 461A is a 4K flash part and the 861A is an 8K part. It's not immediately obvious what any of them would have over the 26L other than more memory. The tools for all of them are free download sort of things. Programmers are relatively cheap.

Depending on how smart the display is, 2K might actually be enough to do the job. If the display is a bit by bit job then it'll take more than that.
