Most gig-ethernet chips try to save CPU cycles by batching interrupts.  There 
is usually some way to turn it off.  I don't have any numbers handy, but I 
wouldn't be surprised if that made the observed round trip times slower than 
100 meg ethernet.

Most UARTs have similar logic.
