In testing and loggging the Z3810A, Z3805A, Z3815A, Z3816A, 59503A, 58503B and the 59551A GPS Receivers, all of which sequenced as follows (Note Denver MST)

17:59:59
18:00:00
18:00:01
18:00:01 (at this point the Leap Second indicator was cleared).

Hi,

This is to report the behavior of my Datum ExacTime 6000 unit dealing with the leap second. I think the behavior shows the age of the unit (around year 2000). It has firmware DT102E.

- It showed two "58" seconds, that would be the leap second insertion...

- It showed a "60" second... what? That made it two leap seconds...

- It skipped the "05" second of the following minute to subtract the extraneous leap second added above...

I have captured this on video and will likely put that on Youtube for those who may be interested. I captured CHU's audio in the background. By the way, CHU's transmitted data was an extra tick for the "60" second.

Regards,

Bert, VE2ZAZ

Watched it on my Garmin GPSMAP396 with a 3D fix.  It did the 23:59:58,
23:59:59, 23:59:59, 24:00:00 thing.  No 60!

Success - Windows 7, running Meinberg NTP. Screen capture of two
desktop widgets that I use. In the video, note that 00:00:00 UTC hangs
for two seconds.

Failure - My Galaxy Tab Android tablet, running the GPS Test app. Not
only did the GPS Test app not show any indication of a leap second,
but it shows both the local date and the UTC date as one day later.
The Android clock shows the correct date.

Oh, as an aside to this - I had Netflix paused while I waited for the
leap second. The video was fullscreen. At the moment of 00:00:00, the
video left fullscreen mode and everything was black. I don't know if
this was caused by the leap second, or simply some glitch at the top
of the hour, or perhaps at midnight UTC. I'll have to experiment to
see if I can reproduce it.

I also saw (and captured a video sequence) of the leap second in
NTGS50AA via LH, what a difference from my first encounter with the leap
second!.
I was working in the frequency timing subsystem of a  Deep Space
Tracking Facility when NASA decided to introduce the leap seconds, I
don't remember it exactly but maybe we were using GMT  because until
then, we used to offset our Cs and Rb frequency at the beginning of each
year (did you notice the thumbwheels inside these standards?). Our first
leap second was in Dec 31 and being this night so special the operations
crews were given permission to leave since no any tracking activity were
planned.  I was in a party and received a call to go to the station to
manually introduce the leap second on the system.  Our frequency and
timing subsystem predated the leap seconds several years so I had to set
our redundant clock 1 second late and make a changeover between second
00 and 01 so the second 00 was 2 seconds long.  Good old times ...

Best regards,
Ignacio, EB4APL

Hi folks,

The leap second was of course broadcast by the German DCF-77 station,
and this went perfectly, as expected. At 1AM (CEST) the 'Leap Second
Announcement' bit was set to high in the 19th second of the datagram.
The leapsecond itself was broadcast by not modulating[1] the 59th second
(which is normally silent to mark the end of the minute), and instead
the carrier was silent on the 60th second. And in the 19th second of the
new minute, the leap second announcement was gone again.

Recorded all this on a DCF-receiver I designed and built over a decade
ago, and still works great. Might even get around to putting it in an
enclosure before the next leap-second ;-)

Regards, Paul Boven - 73 de PEaNUT

[1] DCF-77 seconds are transmitted by reducing the output power of the
transmitter for 1/10th (a zero) or 2/10th (a one). There is also a
phase-modulation on the signal which my receiver doesn't use.
