The other thing that will pay for itself quickly is a "Kilowatt"
meter.  they go for about $20.  Leave one plugged in to record power
usage.   After some measuring my general run of thumb is "Anything you
leave plugged in and running 24x7 will cost you triple digits of
dollars (at least) over a year and anything you turn on, use then
power off (even if it pulls 10 amps like a toaster oven)  costs you
almost nothing over the same year."

BTW grid tied solar power is cost effective now and will become an
even better investment as the cost of electric power raises.   The
only reason not to buy it is if (1) there is no sunlight at your
location or (2) you think the cost of electric power will go down in
the years to come.
