[time-nuts] AT86RF233 & Ranging?

Hi:

From time to time there's a question about a way to do ranging.
The Atmel AT86RF233 is a 2.4 GHz data transceiver.
Atmel has developed a proprietary way of using three of these (controller, initiator, reflector) to determine the range
between the initiator and reflector units.
It involves stepping the frequency so maybe is sort of like FM Doppler ranging.
The example readout is showing 1 cm resolution on a 30 meter range.

There's no info in the AT86RF233 data sheet, but there is some in app notes: AVR2150, AVR2151 & AVR2152.
