The M8F isn’t cheap either, at over US$100. In its marketing materials, it claims to meet master reference requirements for LTE Small Cell sites. It has a survey-in feature for fixed receivers that refines calculated position to a user configured precision. 

I set one up to provide a reference for my lab. Not caring about phase noise, I use the 30.72 MHz from the M8F to get 10 MHz from an off-the-shelf PLL. 

I suspect the support for a DAC / external disciplined oscillator is just to improve the M8F’s holdover performance.
