There's a wide variety of displays available that can be driven with a rPi or similar.  (in weird form factors - "shelf front" displays for instance).
There's also eInk/ePaper.
Some are "direct interface" (in terms of sending LED on/off strings or some sort of matrixed display) others are HDMI.
There's also a large number of "LED Tiles" as used large displays composed of a bunch of tiles. Varied interfaces (serial, Ethernet). 

There are also "elapsed time" displays with 7 segment displays, although the ones I've seen take "advance" pulses (nominally 1 pps) or run at "real time".
