How fancy do you want to get?

These days you can get LED based “display panels” in a range of sizes and pixel densities. The target market appears to be advertising. One of many many examples (chosen randomly):

Pair one or more up with an RPi and away you go. 

At the other end of the range, you can get “7 segment” sort of displays and do a much more basic setup.
