 From hard won personal experience.

If you use FT_PROG, and after re-plugging the interface, the changes 
have not "taken" (i.e. nothing changed) then it is likely you have a 
counterfeit FTDI device.   Such do exist, not as common as the other 
types, but they are out there and can't be detected until you try to use 
them with FT_PROG.   I guess the fakes don't have EEPROM.

We suffered that in the past day job, thankfully the supplier refunded 
us in full, but of course the project* was delayed.

(* A low speed USB to Fibre serial device, needing one of the data lines 
inverted for minimum parts count.)

I've even seen chips marked up at FTDI devices, but when presented to 
the PC, that identifies them as Prolific parts!
