[time-nuts] PM-to-AM noise conversion (was RE: New Question onHP3048A Phase Noise Test Set)

Good points Bruce. I know that Dave Allen and Fred Walls had no problem with
the way I viewed PN issues. However, that was well over 20 years ago. Also a
good point about the A/D. I should have known better as I designed a
spectrum analyzer for a company that I worked for around 1975, and for LF
signals I had it going directly into the A/D. I used digital filtering using
the Remez algorithm (all elliptic, my favorites), but I believe the
processing then was by DFT and not FFT. It is a good idea to have different
points of view for trying to explain things, and I know a lot of times I
probably take too many short cuts. Apologize for taking it personally. -

For baseband signals surely the ADC replaces the detector.

You are not the only one who reads these posts.
Often rephrasing the explanation in several different ways can make it
clearer to others.
Whilst one's own explanation may seem perfectly clear and logical to
oneself this doesn't necessarily mean that others see it in the same light.
It all depends on the readers experience and background.
Often its the unstated assumptions that make the explanation more
comprehensible to others.
