I'd say definitely use talk-only mode when you can. On a stock 5370B you
would just need to flip the DIP switch on the back to TALK ONLY, then
power-cycle or reset the counter.
It can be a good idea to record the data in a simple terminal program when
troubleshooting, as that eliminates TimeLab as a potential variable. The
terminal log can be imported afterward with "File->Import ASCII phase or
frequency data."
If you do want to acquire data directly from the 5370B, use
"Acquire->Acquire from counter in talk-only mode" and tell it whether you
are sending phase differences or frequency. Enter the nominal frequency of
the signal being measured in the "Input frequency" field and set the desired
trace duration.
Then, hit "Monitor" and you should see the readings scrolling by. It will
try to measure the incoming data rate and set the sampling interval
automatically, but if it's much faster than 1 sample per second it's better
to enter the sampling interval manually for accuracy.
At that point, hit "Start Measurement" and it should start pulling in the
data.

Any help would be appreciated. Do you have to put the 5370B in talk only
mode first? And how would you do that.
